Since Kaiba’s story, 3D printing in medicine has been skyrocketing. And the list of objects that have already been successfully printed in this field demonstrates the potential that this technology holds for healthcare in the near future.

Another team at University of Pennsylvania in 2012 took an approach to create a small silicone gel about the size of a small candy gummy bear using 3-D printing. By not printing the whole construct directly, the researchers fabricated sacrificial templates for the vessels that would be inside the construct. [222]

Creating prosthetics is time-consuming because each is custom fitted for the individual. Cost for prosthetics is extremely expensive and for people in developing nations it is basically not affordable. Researchers at the University of Toronto, in collaboration with Autodesk Research and CBM Canada, are using 3D printing to quickly produce inexpensive customizable prosthetic sockets for patients in the developing world. A chemist Lee Cronin at the University of Glasgow is modeling a 3D printer capable of assembling chemical compounds at the molecular level. Patients would go to an online drugstore with their digital prescription, buy the blueprint and the chemical ink needed, and then print the drug at home. This future idea is not far off or as Cronin suggests apps would be available to print the prescribed drug at home. [224]

Soon a heart valve built using a 3D printer will be tested in sheep at Cornell University a design created by Jonathan Butcher. These medical designs are only a few in development as there are hundreds of other 3D print devices. At the field of 3D printing progress AI will be added. [225]

Biosciences Inc using AI and a 3D printer processed 12 samples in less than 13 minutes to detect infectious diseases in developing nations. This has tremendous implications for testing programs in all areas of the world. Their process allows them to extract DNA with the same level of efficacy as spin-column method. Basically, the spin column method relies on the fact that nucleic acid will bind to the solid phase of silica under certain conditions. [226]
